At some point in our lives, we will experience situations which we may struggle to navigate on our own. The purpose of therapy is, with the assistance of a trained professional, for the individual to understand the situation and learn to resolve the concern (s) or issues (s) that prompted the need for therapy. Therapy allows for new perspectives on challenges and therefore helps people find a suitable solution. Therapy can enable individuals to make better life decisions.

The success of therapy depends on a few things including:-

  • The therapist-client relationship – A rapport and climate of trust must be cultivated in order for it to work
  • The individual’s willingness to fully engage in the process
  • The therapeutic environment
  • The external environment which may support or detract from the client’s attendance and personal growth

Much of the resistance to therapy comes from some of the following:-

  • Cultural norms, e.g. in African and Caribbean societies/cultures, where going for counselling of any kind is viewed as a sign of weakness and existence of mental illness thus taboo
  • Pressure – societal, peer and internal
  • The superhero syndrome where one believes they can handle it all on their own

What are some of your perceptions of therapy? What have your experiences been with therapy?
